Frequently Asked Questions About Sex Therapy - Online

Sex Therapy - Online - Dr Ali Taba - Accredited Sex Therapist & Relationship/Couple Counsellor

WHAT IS SEX THERAPY?

Sex therapy is a specialised type of therapy that uses a range of interventions to treat sexual dysfunctions.

IS ONLINE THERAPY (THERAPY VIA VIDEO CALLING) AS EFFECTIVE AS IN-PERSION THERAPY? IS IT FOR ME?

Research consistently shows that online therapy can be as effective as traditional in-person therapy. Over the past few years I have conducted thousands of online therapy sessions and have become a firm believer in working online for various reasons. But, of course, there are exceptions where online therapy is not recommended.

In your initial FREE consultation, we check whether online therapy is a suitable option for you. Online sessions are conducted via Zoom or other secure methods.

what if technology fails?

In case of a technological failure, the session will move to the telephone, and subsequent arrangements will be made over the phone.

HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?

It depends. Sometimes, all you need is reassurance and essential advice. Sometimes the problem is more complex, and we need more sessions. On average, I work with individuals for 5 to 10 sessions and with couples between 10 to 15. Some clients need long-term therapy.

How long is a session?

45 minutes. You can book back-to-back (90 minutes) sessions to be more efficient.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

£75 per session. Couples sessions cost the same as individual sessions. There is a discount for multiple-session bookings.

DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

I can provide you with a statement to bill your insurance if reimbursement is possible through your private insurance company.

DO I NEED TO ATTEND WITH MY PARTNER?

Sexual problems are not one person's problem/fault. They are often the relationship's problem and your partner may have been negatively affected by the problem more than you. I often encourage my clients to attend as a couple when possible. Of course, you can choose to attend by yourself if you prefer or feel more comfortable that way (or if you are not in a relationship).

Couples sessions cost the same as individual sessions.

I am a woman. I feel uncomfortable seeing a male therapist.

For some people, talking about sexual issues with someone of the opposite gender feels uncomfortable. There has been occasions that, following an assessment, I suggested to a female client to work with a female therapist (for example, when they had a history of sexual trauma/abuse, and they were extremely anxious and uncomfortable during the session).

Having said that, there is no evidence to suggest that women should work with female sex therapists, or they achieve better therapy results when they work with female therapists.

Throughout the years, I've worked as a therapist with hundreds of female clients, and I've seen that working with a male therapist can be especially helpful. For example, it can help a woman develop comfort and confidence in having a positive relationship with a man who listens and is sensitive to their experiences and needs. Also, therapy with a male therapist can be a great safe space for a female client to practice developing healthy boundaries and building trust in her relationships with men.
